I think it comes from serving Christ first and worrying about the community second. The thing we don't want to do is get trapped in this mode that "if we don't have a ton of people we are failure" mindset. If we have 10, 50, 100, or 1000 in our communities and we are still serving Christ then the numbers matter not.

The second thing we can do is take a long term approach like you mention BD. Try as much as possible to avoid drive by evangelism and instead just live with people. Go to parties and things that "christians" don't usually go to and be intentional about talking about Christ. When ever I ask God to give me a spiritual conversation at a party, i nearly always get one. We can use these connections to bring seekers to coffee, beer, church, or where ever we can share with them who Christ really is.

Thirdly, don't let other ministry people tell us, that we are a failure. If we are doing points 1 and 2 well, the mainstream Evangelical leaders might not accept us because they will view our smaller numbers as "inconsequential" and our living with people as being "pagans." Even if our local churches won't support the missional church, God will. That's a fact.

Lastly, stay connected. Sharing with each other our hardships, dreams, etc. ensures we won't get lost ourselves along the way.

As we've had to deal with all the various detours that God's put in our path, one thing that Laura and I have recognized is how long things took for people in the Bible. Abraham did not have a child until he was a really old dude. Anointed King David didn't become enthroned King David for years, and in the mean time he had to watch Saul screw things up. Moses spent 40 years in the desert, tending sheep. Even Jesus didn't start his ministry until 3 decades after his birth.

Our ministry may not shoot out of the ground like an overnight plant, but maybe that's a good thing. Maybe it's needs more time to put down some roots, so it can grow strong and tall, so that it can mean something and so that it can weather the cold and rainy climate of the northwest.

I would say that's not quite fair. For instance, Blue Like Jazz and Searching for God Knows What, he alludes quite a bit to scripture and ideas, but he also realizes that for many who are new to the faith or outside the faith, you have to do some work to establish scripture having a role of authority.

In Miller's other books, I would say he does a good job of working through a lite version of some of Metzger's trinitarian/affections theology, which I think is a very biblical system. In this case I even liked the idea of the book of organizing our life around story, etc. It's just that the movie version of story is so shallow and even good books are excluded from it. That was probably my biggest problem on the whole.

3/5? sounds fair. I liked his first book, and the second was okay. It seems to me like Donald Miller has a tendency to focus more on the abstract, artistic, yet realistic side of living a christian life, with the counter-balance being that new/non christians may not see as much of a need for scripture as being central to living a christian life as well. Could just be me though.

Excellent points.

I would add the criticism that it is not incarnational. Disembodied preaching moves in the opposite direction of God's missional movement to the world in Jesus Christ.
